Washington University of Health and Science (WUHS) is a medical university located in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. With more than 20 years of experience in medical education, WUHS provides aspiring physicians with an opportunity to pursue a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree through a structured, competency-based curriculum. The university focuses on developing the academic knowledge and clinical understanding required for a future in medicine.
The WUHS MD program consists of 11.5 semesters, divided into pre-clinical and clinical sciences. Students begin by studying foundational medical subjects during five pre-clinical semesters. This stage helps build an understanding of essential medical concepts. The remaining 6.5 semesters focus on clinical sciences, allowing students to develop practical knowledge through clinical education and supervised training opportunities.
WUHS welcomes students from different academic and cultural backgrounds. Its admissions process does not require the MCAT, although applicants must satisfy the university's academic eligibility criteria. Students can begin their medical education through three annual intakes in January, May, and September. For applicants who need additional academic preparation, WUHS also offers a three-semester Pre-Med Program.
The university is accredited by the Independent Agency for Accreditation and Rating (IAAR), which holds recognition status from the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). Students should also review the applicable World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) listing and ECFMG Sponsor Note when researching their future licensing pathways.
Choosing a medical university is an important decision that requires careful research. Prospective students should consider curriculum structure, admission requirements, accreditation, clinical education, and future licensing eligibility. Washington University of Health and Science aims to provide a structured medical education experience in Belize while supporting students as they work toward their professional goals in medicine.
