I'm the founder of a small marketplace for artisans, and right now I'm choosing our payment infrastructure. It's not the technical integration that frightens me, but the liability and compliance burdens. If I launch payments under my own brand, does all the compliance fall squarely onto my shoulders? I keep reading about AML, data protection, and security requirements, and I don't fully understand what the provider handles versus what remains my responsibility. Has anyone gone through this in practice and broken it down step by step?

And one specific question: do I need my own financial license to launch a white-label solution, or is a standard company registration sufficient? I don't want to launch only to find out later that we can't operate without a special permit.

I was responsible for launching payments at a small startup for six months, so I can share what I paid close attention to. On the Carteza payment solution page, the FAQ promises full control, complete compliance, and support at every step, with dedicated legal sections covering AML, DORA, and privacy policy at the bottom. However, it also explicitly notes that financial services are delivered through licensed partners, while Carteza provides the technical infrastructure and orchestration layer via a single API. Because of this setup, I wouldn't rely strictly on general descriptions regarding licensing—instead, ask them directly during a consultation what is covered by their licensed partners versus what stays on your end, based on your country of incorporation. For me, clearing that up took just one quick call. In which country are you registering your business?
