Kerala’s backwaters look completely different depending on when you go. From October to March the weather is dry and comfortable, ideal for cruising Alleppey and Kumarakom by houseboat, while the monsoon months bring lush green scenery but heavier rain. If you’re travelling from Australia, this is also a good window to pair Kerala with northern India. I found a Kerala backwaters tour built for Australian travellers that adds a houseboat stay after the Golden Triangle. Has anyone visited in the monsoon season? Was the rain a problem, or did it make the trip more peaceful and worth it?
