A trip to Delhi is easier to enjoy once the transport is settled. The city is large, the traffic has a mind of its own, and the difference between a smooth visit and a tiring one often comes down to how you get from place to place.
This guide follows a visit in order, from the planning stage to the last drive to the airport, and explains how a chauffeur-driven cab service in Delhi fits into each stage. It comes from Gayatri Tours & Travels, a transport company based in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, with more than 25 years of experience in passenger transportation.

Before you travel: decide how you will get around

If you take that route, the decision to make before you travel is what kind of car. A few simple questions settle it: how many people, how many bags and how long will you spend in the car? A sedan is generally fine for one to three people with modest luggage. A family with several suitcases will be more comfortable in an Innova Crysta or a similar larger vehicle. A group travelling together is usually better off in a Tempo Traveller than in a convoy of cars.

Landing at IGI Airport
Arrivals are the first test of any cab arrangement. IGI Airport has three terminals, Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, and which one you arrive at depends on your airline and flight. It is worth checking your ticket or airline app before you leave.

When you book an airport pickup, a good operator will ask for your flight number, the terminal, the number of passengers and bags, and a phone number that works when you land. The flight number is the most important of these. Flights can land earlier or later than scheduled, and with the number, the driver can follow the actual arrival.
Before you land, you should have the driver's name, phone number and vehicle details. That means you know whom to look for, and you can call if the meeting point is unclear. If you arrive late at night, this matters even more.
If you are arranging an airport pickup, our Delhi airport service page has the details.

The first drive into the city
The journey from the airport depends on where you are staying, and it also depends on the time of day. Delhi traffic can make the same trip feel very different at 6 a.m. and at 6 p.m. We do not quote fixed journey times, because they depend on the route, the hour and what is happening on the roads that day.

What helps is having the hotel address, preferably as a map pin. Large hotels often have several entrances, and the right one saves time. If you are staying in Central or South Delhi, or near Chanakyapuri, the drive tends to be more straightforward than a trip to the outer parts of the NCR, but the traffic still decides the pace.

Getting around Delhi

Once you are settled, there are two ways to use a car in the city. One is a transfer, a single journey from A to B. The other is a time-based booking, where a car and driver stay with you for a set number of hours.
For most visitors, the time-based option is more practical. If your day takes in several places, the driver waits while you visit, your bags stay in the car and you are not looking for a ride every time you step out.
Before you start, agree on how many hours you expect and which parts of the city and NCR the booking covers. It is much easier to settle that in the morning than at the end of the day.

Our Delhi taxi service page explains local bookings in more detail.

Seeing the sights without wasting the day
Delhi has more to see than most visitors expect, and trying to do it all in a day usually ends with a lot of time in traffic. A better approach is to think in clusters:
• Old Delhi: the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the lanes of Chandni Chowk, which is best enjoyed at an unhurried pace.
• The Lutyens' area: India Gate and the wide, tree-lined avenues around it.
• South Delhi: Humayun's Tomb, Lodhi Garden, Qutub Minar and Hauz Khas.

Our corporate cab services in Delhi NCR page describes how this works in practice.

The last drive: getting back to the airport
Departures call for a little arithmetic. Start with your airline's recommended reporting time, add the time the journey may take from where you are staying, and add a margin for traffic. An early arrival costs you a short wait. A late one can cost you the flight.

A note on official and VIP travel
Some visitors to Delhi are travelling on official business or as guests of government departments. Gayatri Tours & Travels has handled transportation for VIPs, government officials and official guests visiting Government Bhawans across Delhi. That kind of travel depends on punctuality, careful coordination with the receiving party, discretion and flexibility when programmes change. If this applies to you, send us the programme in advance, with the venues, timings and number of passengers.

Why a Chanakyapuri base helps
Chanakyapuri is Delhi's Diplomatic Enclave, with embassies, high commissions and wide, quiet roads. It is close to Central Delhi, which puts hotels, Government Bhawans and business districts within reach. For a transport company, that means pickups in Central and South Delhi start from nearby, and routes towards the airport and Gurugram are within easy reach. Early outstation departures also start from a central point.

What to send when you enquire
It is quicker to get an accurate quote if you send these details in one message:
• Pickup location (a map pin is best)
• Destination, and any stops
• Date and time
• Number of passengers
• Approximate luggage
• For airport trips: flight number and terminal
• For outstation trips: number of days and whether it is one-way or round trip
