The cryptocurrency market moves in cycles. Sometimes Bitcoin leads the market, while at other times many other cryptocurrencies, commonly called altcoins, begin to perform better. When a broad group of altcoins outperforms Bitcoin over a sustained period, people often describe the market as being in an altcoin season. One of the most commonly used ways to measure this change is the Altcoin Season Index.
For someone new to crypto, the name can sound complicated. In reality, the basic idea is quite simple. The index looks at how many selected altcoins have performed better than Bitcoin during a particular period, usually the previous 90 days. A higher number means that more altcoins have beaten Bitcoin. A lower number means Bitcoin has been outperforming a larger share of the altcoin market.
The exact calculation can differ between websites because different platforms may use different groups of coins. For example, CoinMarketCap's version compares eligible coins from its top 100 with Bitcoin over a rolling 90-day period. It considers the market to be in altcoin season when at least 75% of those coins outperform Bitcoin. BlockchainCenter uses a top-50 approach and also uses 75% as the altcoin-season threshold.
This difference is important. There is not one universal index controlled by a single organization. Therefore, readers should always check the methodology behind the particular Altcoin Season Index they are viewing.
The index is useful because looking at one altcoin can give a misleading picture. One token might rise sharply while most of the market remains weak. The index instead focuses on market breadth. It asks a broader question: Are many altcoins actually outperforming Bitcoin?
This article explains the altcoin season index in very simple language. It covers how the index works, how to read its numbers, why Bitcoin matters, what can affect altcoin season, the limitations of the indicator, and how beginners can use the information responsibly.
How The Altcoin Season Index Works
The Altcoin Season Index is designed to show whether a broad group of altcoins is outperforming Bitcoin. The most common methodology uses a rolling 90-day period. In simple terms, the calculation looks backward over the previous three months and checks how individual altcoins performed compared with Bitcoin.
Imagine that an index tracks 50 eligible altcoins. If 30 of those coins performed better than Bitcoin during the previous 90 days, the index would be around 60. If 40 performed better, the index would be around 80. The higher the percentage, the broader the altcoin outperformance.
The widely used BlockchainCenter version defines altcoin season as a period when at least 75% of its top 50 tracked coins outperform Bitcoin over 90 days. Its scale also identifies 25 or below as Bitcoin Season, while values from 26 through 74 sit between those two conditions.
What Can Drive An Altcoin Season
An altcoin season can develop for different reasons. There is no single event that automatically starts one. Crypto markets are affected by liquidity, investor confidence, technology trends, market narratives, regulations, interest rates and many other factors.
One common pattern is increased confidence across the broader cryptocurrency market. When investors become more comfortable with crypto assets, interest may expand beyond Bitcoin. Money and attention can move toward Ethereum and other large projects, followed by different sectors of the altcoin market.
Market narratives can also play an important role. At different times, traders may focus on decentralized finance, gaming, artificial intelligence-related tokens, layer-two networks, meme coins, decentralized physical infrastructure or other themes. When a particular narrative becomes popular, several related tokens can experience increased activity.
However, a strong narrative does not automatically create a broad altcoin season. One sector can perform extremely well while the rest of the altcoin market remains weak. This is one reason the Altcoin Season Index can be useful. It looks at the breadth of performance rather than focusing only on the most popular story.
