Delhi is one of those cities where a sightseeing plan can easily become too ambitious. There are historical monuments, busy markets, temples, gardens and food streets spread across different parts of the city, so trying to see everything in one day can leave you spending more time in traffic than actually enjoying the places.

For a first visit, I think it is better to keep the day simple and group places that are relatively close to each other.

A Good Starting Point for Delhi Sightseeing

If you want to see some of the city's better-known landmarks, you could include India Gate, Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple, Red Fort and Connaught Place.

But rather than putting all of these into one rushed itinerary, divide them according to the area.

For example, one day could focus on Old and Central Delhi, with Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, India Gate and Connaught Place.

Another day could be dedicated to South Delhi, covering Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple and Lodhi Garden.

This gives you more time to actually experience each place.

Old Delhi Is Worth Taking Slowly

Old Delhi has a character of its own. The narrow lanes around Chandni Chowk, the architecture around Jama Masjid and the atmosphere near Red Fort make this part of the city very different from modern Delhi.

And then there is the food.

If you enjoy trying local dishes, give yourself some extra time here instead of treating Old Delhi as another quick sightseeing stop.

South Delhi Offers a Different Experience

South Delhi is generally more spread out and has several important historical and cultural attractions.

Qutub Minar is an obvious highlight, while Humayun's Tomb is another place that deserves some time rather than just a quick photograph.

Depending on your interests, Lotus Temple and Lodhi Garden can also fit comfortably into a South Delhi sightseeing plan.

Don't Forget the Practical Side

Delhi traffic can change your plans quite quickly. A location may look close on a map but take considerably longer during a busy part of the day.

That's why I prefer planning a sightseeing route by area instead of choosing attractions randomly.

If you're travelling with family, children or older travellers, having a car and chauffeur for the day can also make things easier. You don't have to repeatedly arrange transportation between attractions, and you can keep the itinerary flexible.

Gayatri Tours & Travels, based in Chanakyapuri, provides chauffeur-driven cars for Delhi local sightseeing, airport transfers, corporate travel, VIP and official transportation and outstation journeys.

For someone looking for a Delhi taxi service for a sightseeing day, the important thing is not simply finding a car. The vehicle should be comfortable, the chauffeur should know the city and the route should make sense.

How Much Time Do You Need?

I'd suggest two days if you want to see the main attractions without rushing.

A simple plan could be:

Day 1 – Old & Central Delhi
Red Fort ? Jama Masjid ? Chandni Chowk ? India Gate ? Connaught Place

Day 2 – South Delhi
Humayun's Tomb ? Qutub Minar ? Lotus Temple ? Lodhi Garden

If you have a third day, keep it flexible. You could visit Akshardham, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, explore some markets or simply spend more time experiencing the city.

The Best Part Isn't Always the Landmark

Delhi sightseeing isn't only about collecting photographs of famous monuments.

Sometimes it's the walk through an old market, a cup of chai after visiting a monument, discovering a small food place or watching the city change from afternoon to evening that makes the trip memorable.

So if you're planning a Delhi local sightseeing trip, leave a little room in your schedule for those unplanned moments. Delhi has plenty of them.
