I've seen strategies with five or six indicators, multiple timeframes and a ton of rules. Then someone else says they only use price action and one moving average. Does a day trading strategy need to be complicated to work?

Not necessarily. I'd actually want to know whether you can clearly explain why you're entering, where the trade is invalidated and where you're getting out.
Having more indicators doesn't automatically give you more information. Sometimes it just gives you more reasons to convince yourself to take a trade.
