I normally use isolated margin because I don't want one bad trade affecting everything else in my account. But I'm still trying to understand how much margin mode changes the actual risk of a perpetual.

It can make a pretty big difference. With isolated margin, you're basically assigning specific collateral to the position. With cross margin, the broader account balance can be used to support positions. Neither one changes the funding mechanism, but they change how much capital is exposed if the position starts going against you. I'd definitely check the margin mode before looking at the leverage number. There's a good explanation of that distinction here: https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/four-things-that-decide-what-a-perpetual-position-costs.
