Meditation and mantra are important elements of many Kundalini Yoga traditions and add a reflective dimension to the physical practice. During a session, practitioners may move through a specific sequence before settling into meditation, chanting, or focused breathing. Meditation can involve observing the breath, concentrating on a particular object, repeating a mantra, visualisation, or other traditional methods. A mantra is generally a sound, word, or phrase that is repeated as a means of concentration and, within traditional contexts, spiritual practice. Repetition can provide the mind with a consistent point of focus and encourage practitioners to remain attentive. Kundalini Yoga does not require meditation to be completely effortless; beginners may experience distractions and an active mind, and learning to return attention to the chosen focus is part of the process. The practice also introduces students to traditional ideas about awareness and consciousness. Different teachers may use different meditation and mantra techniques, so the experience can vary between schools and lineages. Approaching these practices with patience and respect for their traditional background can make the learning experience more meaningful. When combined with movement, pranayama, and relaxation, meditation and mantra help create the distinctive multidimensional character of Kundalini Yoga.
