My younger brother just landed a dream job in Vancouver, but he is absolutely refusing to leave his custom squat rack and heavy plate set behind in Brisbane. We spent the better part of Sunday afternoon measuring iron weights and realizing that the sheer density of a home gym makes standard international couriers laugh in your face. It is a total nightmare to find a balance between paying for a full twenty-foot container or trying to cram everything into a shared wooden crate that might just splinter under the pressure. I was honestly about to tell him to just sell it all and buy new gear in BC, but then I started looking for a way to let independent freight forwarders bid on the specific weight and dimensions.
A friend mentioned that checking the shipping to canada options on the GetTransport marketplace might actually save him from overpaying for a "standard" relocation package. It turns out that when carriers are competing for your specific route, the prices for heavy, awkward loads become a lot more reasonable.

Does anyone here have a horror story or a success tip for moving heavy gym equipment or cast iron across the ocean recently? I’m genuinely curious if the saltwater air during a six-week transit actually causes rust on Olympic bars even if they are wrapped in plastic, or if I am just being paranoid. Also, if you’ve used a platform where multiple companies bid for your cargo, did you find that the smaller "owner-operator" truckers were more flexible with the final delivery to a residential driveway? I’d really appreciate any advice on how to handle the "unloading" part of the deal, as I've heard some carriers won't even touch the items once they hit the curb. It is our first time managing a DIY move from the Gold Coast to the Great White North, so any heads-up on hidden "port congestion" fees would be a massive lifesaver.
