I decided to learn more about derivatives in my spare time, because my crypto is just sitting in the portfolio and I want some action. I opened Bybit, launched the trading terminal, and honestly got a bit confused by the number of buttons. What worried me the most was the Unified Trading Account — it seems useful, but I’m afraid that if one trade goes into the red, it could drag down my entire balance. I had a bad experience on another exchange where I didn’t understand cross margin and lost a year’s worth of profit overnight because of a sharp squeeze. How can a beginner on Bybit protect themselves as much as possible from situations like that?

And I forgot to ask about the reduce-only mode. Does it really prevent accidentally opening an opposite position when you just want to close a trade in profit, or did I misunderstand how this order setting works?

Using UTA is largely about adapting and setting your risk limits properly. The main thing is not to use excessive leverage and always place stop-loss orders. As for the reduce-only function - it’s a must-have! It guarantees that your order will only close the current position and won’t open a new one in the opposite direction if the price suddenly moves past your take-profit. I'd say it's a good idea for you to check out a Bybit futures tutorial and review on the iTrusty portal! To my mind, it's pretty clearly explained the difference between isolated margin and unified account. Moreover, it's got all the deets about one-way mode, hedge mode, and a bunch of other stuff. And about the protection, you probably didn't know that the exchange has this awesome feature called demo trading, did you? It lets you try out all the buttons with virtual money, so you don't have to worry about any risk.
