Détente, a French term meaning "relaxation," describes a period of improved relations involving the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, especially in the 1970s. This era marked a departure from the tense and often combative stance that had defined the early Cold War, where the two superpowers engaged within an arms race, proxy wars, and ideological struggles.
