Neti Kriya is one of the six classical purification techniques, or Shatkarma, mentioned in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and other ancient yogic texts. It is a powerful cleansing practice that helps to purify the nasal passages, clear accumulated mucus, and promote easy breathing. Traditionally, there are two main types of Neti Kriya—Jala Neti (water cleansing) and Sutra Neti (thread cleansing). In Jala Neti, lukewarm saline water is poured through one nostril and allowed to flow out from the other, effectively washing away dust, allergens, and toxins. Sutra Neti, on the other hand, involves the use of a soft rubber catheter or thread to cleanse deeper parts of the nasal cavity. Regular practice of Neti Kriya improves respiratory efficiency, enhances focus, and balances the flow of prana (vital energy) throughout the body. It is particularly beneficial for those suffering from sinusitis, allergies, asthma, or frequent colds. Beyond its physical benefits, Neti Kriya also has a profound effect on the mind, bringing clarity, calmness, and a heightened sense of awareness. In yoga teacher training programs, students are often introduced to Neti Kriya as an essential preparatory practice, helping them experience the deeper aspects of pranayama and meditation by first purifying the body’s internal pathways.
