The 8171 program is a key initiative launched by the Government of Pakistan to support low-income families through financial aid. Part of the Ehsaas and Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), 8171 allows citizens to check their eligibility for cash assistance via a simple SMS service or online portal. By sending their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) number to 8171, individuals can determine whether they qualify for monthly stipends, designed to help them meet basic living expenses such as food, healthcare, and education.
This initiative plays a crucial role in reducing poverty and improving the socio-economic conditions of vulnerable groups, especially women, elderly citizens, and those affected by inflation or unemployment. The transparency of the system, combined with digital registration and biometric verification, has made the distribution process more efficient and corruption-resistant.
In 2025, updates to the program have expanded coverage and increased payments to adjust for rising living costs. Moreover, the government continues to raise awareness about 8171 through public campaigns to ensure that eligible citizens can access the benefits without barriers. For many Pakistanis, 8171 is more than a number—it represents hope, stability, and a step toward a more equitable society.
