Nigeria's JAMB, WAEC, and NYSC Programs
Nigeria's education and youth service sectors continue to evolve with new policies and timelines aimed at improving access and efficiency. As of September 3, 2025, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), West African Examinations Council (WAEC), and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have issued several key announcements impacting students and graduates.
JAMB has reiterated strict admission deadlines for the 2025/2026 cycle. Public universities must finalize post-UTME screenings and submit candidate lists through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) by September 30, 2025, with all public institutions completing admissions by October 31. Private universities have until November 30. Additionally, UTME candidates are directed to re-upload their 2025 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) results to the JAMB portal to ensure eligibility. In a progressive step, JAMB will screen 599 exceptional underage candidates (under 16) who scored above 300 in the 2025 UTME, with sessions scheduled from September 22-26 in Lagos, Abuja, and Owerri. The 2025 Policy Meeting established minimum admission scores: 150 for universities, 140 for nursing colleges, and 120 for polytechnics and education colleges.
WAEC is advancing toward digitalization, committing to a full transition to computer-based testing (CBT) for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) by 2026, with assurances that no student will be disadvantaged. However, the National Assembly has advised caution, highlighting potential challenges for rural students due to unequal technology access. The 2025 WASSCE results faced scrutiny after an initial 38% pass rate was revised to 63% following technical issues and a temporary withdrawal. WAEC has also extended the 2025 GCE (2nd Series) registration deadline to September 7, with PIN generation closing then. Furthermore, 2025 BECE results were released, with some cancellations and withholdings due to malpractices.
NYSC is gearing up for 2025 Batch B Stream 2 mobilization. Online registration is set to launch in the first week of September, making the month busy for prospective corps members. The scheme's calendar remains standard: Batch A (March-May), Batch B (July-September), and Batch C (October-December). Today, NYSC emphasized competence during a roundtable with professionals, praising collaborations. Employers are urged to support corps members with transport and housing. A recent assault on a corps member by a military officer in Calabar has raised safety concerns.
These developments underscore Nigeria's commitment to educational equity and youth empowerment, though issues like digital divides and administrative hurdles remain. Stakeholders hope for seamless execution to support the nation's young talent.
