As part of ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable citizens and ensure efficient service delivery, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is implementing eKYC—Electronic Know Your Customer—as a mandatory step in the social grant application process.
What Is SASSA eKYC?
SASSA Status check Failed, short for Electronic Know Your Customer, is a digital verification system that uses biometric data—such as fingerprints or facial recognition—to confirm the identity of grant applicants and beneficiaries. This system is being adopted to ensure that social grants reach the intended recipients and to eliminate fraud and duplication.
Why Is SASSA Rolling Out eKYC?
With more than 18 million South Africans depending on social grants each month, traditional ID verification methods have proved vulnerable to fraud, identity theft, and duplicate claims. By introducing biometric verification, SASSA aims to strengthen beneficiary authentication, reduce fraudulent claims, and maintain grant integrity.
Who Needs to Complete eKYC?
As of September 1, 2025, all new social grant applications will require biometric enrolment through eKYC. Previously, this was only required for applicants of the SRD grant or those undergoing review, but the process is now being expanded to all grants. Beneficiaries who wish to change their personal details—like banking info or contact numbers—will also need to re-enroll using biometric data.
How to Complete SASSA eKYC
The process is designed to be quick and accessible:
Visit your nearest SASSA office, where biometric infrastructure has been set up.

Provide your South African ID document.

Submit biometric data—either fingerprints or a facial scan—which will be linked to your grant profile.

After submission, eKYC is considered complete and won’t need repeating, unless you change personal details.

What Happens If You Don’t Complete eKYC?
If an application lacks the required biometric information, it will be automatically moved into a review cycle, delaying approval and payments. Applicants are notified and given instructions to visit a SASSA office to finalize verification.
Benefits of eKYC for Beneficiaries
Improved accuracy: Verifies identity using biometric data, reducing identity-based errors.

Fraud prevention: Guards against syndicates and identity-related abuse.

Payment integrity: Helps ensure that payments go to the correct individuals.

Streamlined records: Enhances system integrity through accurate, verifiable data.

Final Thoughts
SASSA’s roll-out of biometric eKYC for social grant verification marks an important milestone in modernising the grant system. While the in-person requirement may add one more step for applicants, it's a critical measure to safeguard social support systems. With the roll-out set for September 2025, affected beneficiaries should visit their local SASSA office to complete verification and avoid delays in grant access.
