Installing a custom ringtone on an iPhone can be a little more complex than on an Android device, as Apple has a more closed ecosystem. There are two main methods: purchasing a ringtone through the iTunes Store or creating one yourself, usually using the GarageBand app at sonnerietelephone.org

Method 1: Buying ringtones through the iTunes Store
This is the simplest and most straightforward method, but it comes with a fee.

Open the iTunes Store app on your iPhone.

Tap the "More" button at the bottom of the screen, then select "Ringtones."

You can browse ringtones by genre, popularity, or use the search bar to find a specific song or artist.

Tap a ringtone to listen to a preview.

To purchase it, tap the price, then follow the instructions. You'll have the option to set it as your default ringtone, a message sound, or assign it to a contact.

Once purchased, the ringtone will automatically appear in your ringtones list in your iPhone settings.

Method 2: Create a custom ringtone with GarageBand
This method is free and allows you to turn any audio file in your library into a ringtone. The ringtone must be less than 30 seconds long and end with the .m4r extension to be recognized.

Install GarageBand: If you don't already have it, download the GarageBand app from the App Store.

Import your audio file: Open GarageBand, create a new project (e.g., an audio recording), then tap the "loop" icon to import a file from your music library or files. Note: The file must not be copyrighted (for example, music downloaded via Apple Music with a subscription cannot be used).

Trim the clip: Use the app's editing tools to trim the 30-second section you want to use as your ringtone.

Save and export: Tap the arrow in the top left corner and select "My Songs." Long-press the song you just created, then choose "Share."

Set the ringtone: Select the "Ringtone" option. Give your ringtone a name, then tap "Export." The iPhone will automatically convert it to the correct format. Once the export is complete, you'll have the option to set it as a standard ringtone, a message ringtone, or assign it to a contact.

Once these steps are complete, you'll find your ringtone in Settings > Sounds & Vibration > Ringtone.

Method 3: Using a computer (PC or Mac)
This method is older but still effective for those who prefer to work on a computer. It involves converting an audio file into a ringtone via iTunes/Apple Music and syncing it to your iPhone.

Prepare the file: On your computer, open the audio file you want to use (MP3, AAC, etc.). Make sure the clip is less than 30 seconds long.

Convert to m4r format: In iTunes (PC) or the Music app (Mac), you can create an AAC version of a song, then rename the file extension from .m4a to .m4r.

Transfer to iPhone: Connect your iPhone to your computer, then drag and drop the .m4r file into the "Sounds" or "Tones" section of your device. The file will sync and appear in your iPhone's settings.
