Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a worldwide recognized game due to its extraordinarily difficult gameplay and design. Players control a character sitting in a jar, using a hammer to crawl over treacherous terrain with no save points; one minor mistake and they fall almost immediately. The game has become an online craze due to frustration, curiosity, and a sense of conquering. With that in mind, the Scratch community, a visual programming platform for people of all ages, soon created a Scratch version of Getting Over It. So, how did the famed scratch games challenge's design come about?
Scratch lacks a powerful physics system like Unity or Unreal Engine, however the community has developed numerous solutions:
Use variables and loops to simulate gravity and control the location of the character.
The hammer mechanism is programmed by revolving around an axis and determining the angle and reaction force when it impacts the terrain.
The complex terrain is generated with drawings (costumes) or sprites that are placed to simulate the difficult sense of climbing.
Precise control by mouse or keyboard, identical to the original.
These aspects are carefully integrated to produce an experience that is both identical to the original and bears the creative stamp of the Scratch coder. The design process for the Getting Over It Scratch version demonstrates the potential of the creative community. Despite the constraints of visual programming tools, Scratch programmers were able to maintain the tough spirit of the original game while also turning it into an engaging learning project.
