Mebendazole 100 mg is a commonly prescribed antiparasitic medication used to treat a variety of intestinal worm infections such as pinworms, roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. It works by preventing the worms from absorbing essential sugars, ultimately causing them to die and be eliminated from the body through the stool.
For adult patients, the standard dosage of Mebendazole 100 mg tablet depends on the type of parasitic infection:
Pinworm (Enterobiasis): A single dose of 100 mg is usually sufficient. In some cases, a second dose may be recommended after two weeks to prevent reinfection.
Roundworm, Hookworm, and Whipworm (Ascariasis, Ancylostomiasis, Trichuriasis): The typical dosage is 100 mg twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening) for three consecutive days.
Mixed Helminth Infections: The same three-day course of 100 mg twice daily is generally effective.
Mebendazole can be taken with or without food, and it is usually well-tolerated. Tablets can be swallowed whole, chewed, or crushed, especially if the patient has difficulty swallowing. No special preparation, such as fasting or laxatives, is required before or after taking the medication.
It is important for adults to follow the entire treatment course as prescribed, even if symptoms resolve early. Missing doses or stopping early can lead to ineffective treatment or recurrence.
As with any medication, consult a healthcare professional before use, particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medications. Mebendazole is generally safe, but mild side effects such as stomach pain, diarrhea, or headache can occur in some individuals.
