Behind closed doors in massive sheds, hidden from sight, billions of animals live in existences marked by suffering, isolation, and neglect. These Factory Farms Cruelty—pigs, chickens, cows, fish, and more—are victims of an agribusiness model designed for profit, not compassion. The Humane Foundation is working to end this systematic cruelty through education, advocacy, and action, shedding light on the horrors of factory farming.

It is a moral emergency: unseen lives lost daily in the shadows of massive sheds, tanks, and cages, with no voice, no rights, and no relief. While food stores are lined with neatly packaged animal products, few people are aware of the suffering, destruction, and danger that lie behind each one.

### Industrial Animal Agriculture in Focus

Factory farming—the intensive, industrial-scale breeding and slaughter of animals for food—has become one of the most significant issues facing society of our time.

### The Machinery of Suffering

At the heart of the issue is the view of animals as production tools. Chickens are engineered to grow so fast their skeletal systems can’t keep up. Mother pigs are confined in crates so small they cannot turn around. Dairy cows are repeatedly inseminated and suffer maternal loss to maximize yield. Even aquatic animals, frequently ignored in animal welfare, suffer through high-density confinement and prolonged suffering in industrial fish farms.

These practices are not exceptions—they are the norm. Globally, over 90% of farmed animals are raised under factory farm conditions. Science proves that these animals can experience a full range of emotions. Yet, their needs are ignored for profit margins.

### Why Cruelty Continues

Despite growing awareness of animal sentience, regulations for farmed animals remain insufficient. Actions that would be unacceptable if committed against a dog or cat—like cramped, filthy conditions—are routine in animal agriculture.

Factory farming thrives on a disconnect: between the plate and the animal, between meat and the lives behind it. This desensitization is sustained by clean packaging, greenwashing, and industry secrecy. Animals are stripped of individuality and referred to as “stock”—a linguistic erasure that hides suffering.

### A Public Health and Climate Time Bomb

Factory farming also threatens our survival.

- **Antibiotic resistance**: Around 70% of antibiotics worldwide are used on farmed animals to combat unsanitary, overcrowded conditions. This fuels drug resistance—a crisis the WHO ranks among the top global health threats.
- **Zoonotic diseases**: High-density animal farming increases the chance of outbreaks like zoonotic viruses that can jump to humans.
- **Diet-related illness**: Diets rich in processed meat are linked to cancer, while plant-forward eating show environmental advantages.
- **Environmental degradation**: Factory farms are major contributors of greenhouse gases, habitat destruction, aquifer damage, and species extinction. Livestock uses nearly 80% of agricultural land but provides less than 20% of the world’s calories.

### A Broken System on the Brink

Industrial animal agriculture is fundamentally unsustainable. It threatens food systems, harms human health, and jeopardizes our future.

But there is change. Across the globe, advocates, innovators, young people are demanding better. Alternative proteins are becoming mainstream. Welfare regulations are reshaping norms. New generations are rejecting factory farming.

### Time for Change

The question is no longer *if* animals suffer in factory farms—but what we are willing to accept.

Every meal, every policy, is a vote for the kind of world we want. Ending factory farming isn’t about personal perfection; it’s about collective responsibility.

It’s time to reimagine our relationship with animals—not as tools, but as lives worthy of compassion.

Have you ever wondered who posts some of this stuff that you come across? Recently it seems to have become an epidemic, although it seems to be changing for the better. Do you agree? Mezzanine floor
