One team will be popping champagne bottles in Milwaukee on Wednesdayand it could be either the Brewers, the Phillies, or even both. Confused? Lets break it down.
As the Phillies and Brewers prepare for the final game of their three-game series at 7:40 p.m. ET/6:40 CT on MLB Network, both teams will be eyeing postseason spots, depending on how the night plays out.
The Brewers currently lead the Cubs by 10 games in the NL Central with a magic number of one. If the Cubs lose to the A's this afternoon, Milwaukee will secure the division title. However, if the Cubs win and the Phillies also come out victorious, Philadelphia will clinch a playoff berth, and the Brewers will have to hold off their celebration for at least one more day. The Phillies can also clinch with a loss from the Braves in Cincinnati and a Mets defeat at home against the Nationals.
So https://www.philliesplayerfanstore.com/bake_mcbride_jersey-116, how can the Phillies clinch? With a win, they will reach 92 victories on the season. If the Braves match that total, they'd need to win all three of their games against the Mets, keeping New York's total at a maximum of 91 wins. Since two teams from each division make the playoffs, a Phillies win would guarantee them a spot in October.
Both the Brewers and Phillies have been comfortably ahead in their respective divisions for some time now, so clinching a playoff berth seems like a given. The real goal now is to secure the highest possible seed and earn a first-round bye. This is where the Phillies have the advantage.
By winning 5-1 over the Brewers on Tuesday, the Phillies clinched the season series against Milwaukee, giving them the tiebreaker for postseason seeding. This means that if both teams finish with the same regular-season record https://www.philliesplayerfanstore.com/alec_bohm_jersey-161, the Phillies would secure a bye in the first round. The win also ensures they would have home-field advantage should they face the Brewers in the NL Championship Series.
Tonights matchup will be exciting, as Freddy Peralta takes the mound for the Brewers and Aaron Nola starts for the Phillies. Regardless of who wins, one team will have reason to celebrate.
