Salvia Divinorum , often referred to simply as salvia, is a psychoactive plant native to the cloud forests of the Sierra Mazateca region in Oaxaca, Mexico. It has a long history of use in indigenous rituals, particularly among the Mazatec people, who regarded it as sacred and used it for spiritual healing and divination purposes. The plant contains the psychoactive compound salvinorin A, which is a potent kappa opioid receptor agonist. Despite its traditional use, salvia gained wider attention in the late 20th century as it became popularized in Western cultures for its hallucinogenic effects. However, its legality and status as a controlled substance vary in different parts of the world, and research into its potential therapeutic applications and risks continues.
