Understanding that I'm only as good as my staff and partners, and therefore a cooperative, team-building culture is an absolute imperative. SaaS Attorney
Respect for my adversaries and especially their staff, and similarly my respect for the officials and staff of the agencies with which I work.
Belief that clients need to be informed and empowered, and that their budgetary expectations are met.
Recognition that my client is usually my most important resource, and that my success or failure is hugely dependent on my relationship with the client and the client's key employees and staff.
Insistence on clear roles. For the most part, I advise clients and they make the decisions. Depending on the client and the circumstances, the roles adjust somewhat.
Availability for communication.
Ability to elicit all relevant facts that I can think of and to distinguish between promising and unpromising approaches.
Specialized knowledge in certain areas of the law, my generalized knowledge that allows me to see problems in a full context, and my knowledge of my limits.
Willingness to bring in other professionals when appropriate, and ability to work cooperatively with my colleagues.
Understanding that representation is about achieving the appropriate result for the client, not about satisfying any ego needs. I'll do battle when necessary, but really you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
Insistence that every factual representation be reliable and that every legal citation be scrupulously correct.
Insistence on following the court or agency's rules for submissions of documents, and extra efforts to assist ease of understanding for the decisionmakers (proper grammar and syntax, charts, tabbed exhibits, larger fonts for judges I know to have difficulty in reading the smaller fonts allowed).
Ability to foresee likely problems and confront them early. I will tell a client from the start that he or she would be wasting money by a particular approach.
Deep belief in the system of justice, warts and all, and my continued sense of curiosity and fun in practicing law. Part of me is still the five-year-old who was fascinated by watching Perry Mason and I hope that never goes away.
