In general, ovarian cysts are common in women. However, septated ovarian cysts are serious and more dangerous compared to simple ovarian cysts because they can become malignant tumors. The structure and components of septated ovarian cysts place it distinctly over simple ovarian cysts. Septated ovarian cysts are usually made up of both solid and liquid components in a walled sac, thus the term septated (septa = wall). They appear as segments or in clumps separated by a membrane. The thickness of these membranes can determine the malignancy of the growth. Mucus may also be present inside them.

There are 3 common types of septated or complex cysts in the ovaries:

1.Dermoid cysts or ovarian neoplasms are slow growing ovarian tumors that may be present during birth and grow eventually. They usually develop from the ovaries' germ cell. Sometimes they contain hair and teeth. 95% of this type are benign and can usually grow into 2-4 inches in diameter.

2.Cystadenomas are filled with either liquid components or with mucus with bits of tissue inside.

3.Endometrioma or chocolate tumor form as a result of endometriosis wherein endometrial tissues normally found in the uterus grows in other areas particularly in the ovaries. It is usually filled with dark blood resembling chocolate. After successive menstrual cycle, this misplaced endometrial tissue bleed forming endometrial cysts. If left undetected, endometrial cysts can grow as large as a grapefruit. They are filled with blood or liquid components resembling chocolate.
