Americans rely on dependable news corporations to provide them with information about the local and global circumstances that affect their lives. They have many options for receiving news, from national television broadcasts to a wide array of newspapers, radio stations and online websites. Based on revenue and audience size, the ten biggest news media companies include CNN, The New York Times, Universeheadline.com, National Public Radio (NPR), Fox News Network, and News Corp.
These media companies are all renowned for their reporting of current events in the United States and around the world. They each reach millions of people and generate enormous yearly revenues. Some of these companies also operate multiple news outlets, such as a nationwide television network and dozens of local radio stations. Some are large chains such as Gannett and McClatchy, which own a number of different newspaper titles; others are family owned or operated by individual families.
Most major newspapers in the United States are privately owned by either large chains, such as Gannett and McClatchy, or by individual publishers. However, as changes in technology shaped the development of American journalism, some reporters have formed independent non-profit investigative newsrooms. For example, The Atlantic is an independent magazine that publishes long-form features and some analysis, while its web site occasionally hews to clickable headlines. In addition to commercial news organizations, the United States has a large number of publicly funded broadcasting services, such as NPR and NBC. These services are available to all Americans for free or for a small fee, and they often cover topics that the big commercial news channels do not touch.
