Cinavia is an analog watermarking system developed by Verance. It is also known as the Verance Copy Management System for Audiovisual Content (VCMS/AV). Detection of the Cinavia watermark, which is recorded into Blu-ray discs, is a protective measure against copying of the disc contents. Cinavia technology is specifically designed to limit copyright infringements on DVD and Blu-ray releases of television shows, concerts, movies and other forms of audiovisual entertainment. It offers a high level of protection by limiting the usage of copies made without permission from the copyright owners of professionally crafted videos.
Cinavia's watermarking facility survives various transfer methods and stays within the audio signal. It also survives reproduction and recording using both analogue and digital procedures. Verance offers users the assurance that the Cinavia watermark has no deleterious effects on the quality of the audio during disc playback. From the year 2012, all Blu-ray Disc players are mandatorily equipped with updated software to support Cinavia detection. New players have Cinavia detection tools, but old models are not equipped as such.
Purpose of Cinavia watermarking
Cinavia offers ample protection for movies and other filmed entertainment. The main objective of the developers of this system is to prevent both legal and pirate copying of DVDs and Blur-ray discs. For example, a video that is intended for use only in theater equipment and not for home viewing that has an embedded Cinavia code will refuse to play on any unauthorized device.
The Cinavia watermark spells trouble for those who produce cam bootlegs. People who make a living making illegal copies of commercial DVDs and Blu-ray Discs are in trouble as well, since device using updated software will detect the lack of utilization of AACS in the former and CSS in the latter. A professionally produced Blu-ray disc with Cinavia protection is cannot be copied easily. The watermark is embedded in the audio track, and detection of the watermark automatically puts a stop to the playback if the device is not authorized for such a purpose.
How does it work?
A Blu-ray player with Cinavia detection software can determine whether the device used for playback is authorized for the watermark detected. If the player that is used for playback is not authorized, the user receives a message on the screen. The message states succinctly that the media being played is not authorized on the device. As soon as this message appears the program either stops completely, or the sound is suddenly muted. These are the restrictions imposed by Cinavia technology.
The message received also reminds the user to procure a legal copy to continue enjoying the program. The user is advised further to go online and visit the official Cinavia website for additional information.
