Web-based merchants need a merchant account that enables them to process card-not-present (CNP) transactions online. This is usually done through an electronic payment gateway that processes via the Internet.

MOTO merchants, or those who deal in mail order or telephone order transactions, also deal in CNP transactions. Low volume MOTO credit card processing iso often use phone credit card processing that requires them to enter the cardholder data into the processor's system via a touchtone phone.

Merchants who rely on sales in the field - service providers, outdoor market and mobile vendors - can now count on mobile credit card processing via a smartphone or mobile device. Alternatively, they can use wireless processing through a small, handheld terminal.

Setting up a merchant account with a credit card processor is similar to applying for a credit card account. The processor requires certain business-related information, including how long you've been in business, type of business, outstanding debt and debt payment history. The processor wants to enough information to feel secure that you'll be a good business partner before signing you up for service.
