Benoquin lotion is used to treat extensive vitiligo, a skin condition in which erroneous skin patches lose their colour and turn white and cover around 50% of the body's surface. Melanocytes, which produce pigment, are destroyed as a result of this. Vitiligo patients who have pigmented skin patches that don't match the sections of their skin that have lost colour can use benoquin cream to lighten their skin. Skin discoloration caused by Benoquin lotion is permanent and increases sunburn sensitivity.
Monobenzone, also known as the monobenzyl ether of hyquinone, is an ingredient in Benoquin Cream that destroys any residual melanocytes by promoting the creation of free radicals in the skin. The monobenzone in Benoquin cream also works by preventing the tyrosine enzyme from producing melanin, the pigment responsible for the skin's colour. The sections of normal skin eventually lighten to match the patches of vitiliginous lighter skin as the amount of melanin generated declines.
