Giants-Dodgers? Pennant race baseball. The Tigers-Royals back-and-forth? Cla sic September. Whatever that was between theMariners andBlue Jays on Monday? Eh, none of the above.Such were the highlights as baseball began the final weekofthe regular season. First, the NL West showdown between San Francisco and Los Angeles,a tense13-inningaffair won by the Giants, 5-2, in front of 53,500 (largest announced crowd of the season in MLB)at Chavez Ravine. MORE: | Andrew Susac put San Francisco ahead witha two-out,pinch-hit RBI single off reliever Kevin Correia in the 13th. Gregor Blanco followed with a two-run double. Hunter Strickland pitched a perfect bottom of the 13th for the save. The Giants' victory kept the Dodgers' magic number to clinch the division at 3and reduced LA's division lead to 3 1/2 games. As important for the Giants, they maintained their tie with the Pirates for the top wild-card spot. Pittsburgh beat the Braves, 1-0, in Atlanta hours earlier. Hours before Susac's decisive blow,Kansas City sliced Detroit's lead in the AL Central to onegame, courtesy of a2-0 win at Cleveland coupled with the Tigers' 2-0 home lo s to the White Sox. The night could have been better for KC, but it beganit by losingto the Indians, 4-3, inthe completion of a game suspended Aug. 31. Michael Carter II Jerseys Danny Duffy and three relievers combined on a seven-hit shutout in the "nightcap."KC dropped the Indians to 31/2 games out of a wild-card berth. FOX SPORTS: "The teams we needed to lose, lost tonight," first baseman Eric Hosmer, who drove in one of the Royals' runs with a single, told reporters. "We gained some ground, especially playing these guys. They're a tough team. If we get a chance to put these guys away we need to make the most of it." The Tigers failed to solve White Sox rookie right-hander Chris Ba sitt, who grew up about an hour south of Comerica Park in Ohio. Ba sitt held them scorele s over 7 2/3 innings. "We've got six games left, and we've got control of our fate," Detroit reliever Joba Chamberlain said. "That's all you can ask for at this point. If we do our jobs, we'll win the division." The M's did the opposite of their jobs as they were being run out of Rogers Centre by the Jays, 14-4. Seattle fell behind 4-1 after an inning and 9-1 after three. Starter James Paxton, a British Columbia product pitching in Jermaine Johnson II Jerseys Toronto, allowed eight earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. "They just didn't get the job done," Mariners manager McClendon told reporters, per MLB.com. "These guys have been great all year. Our pitching has been our foundation. But they're only human. I can tell you this, they're out there trying. They're doing the best they can. And we'll come back tomorrow and see if we can win a ballgame." Seattle isnowtwo games behind KC in the race for the second wild-card berth. Both teams have six games remaining. Toronto is still mathematically alive, six back with six to go. The Royals and M's are chasing the A's for the top spot. Oakland is a game up on KC for that position after its 8-4 home victory over the Angels. The A's knocked out LA starter C.J. Wilson with four runsin the first inning. Jeff Samardzija welcomed the rare offensive support and threw seven innings of one-run (unearned)ball. In other key games: The Cardinals reduced their magic number in the NL Central to 4 with an 8-0 win over the Cubs. Adam Wainwright earned Elijah Moore Jerseys his 20th win with seven scorele s frames. Derek Jeter drove in three runs and Michael Pineda allowed one hit over 7 1/3 innings, leading the Yankees to a 5-0 win over the Orioles. New York is four games behind the Royals in the wild-card race. MAGIC NUMBERSDetroit, 6; St. Louis, 4; Los Angeles, 3.
